Moving abroad isn't easy. At TeacherScout, we don’t just place you in schools—we prepare and support you from the moment you register your interest to the day you land in your new role, and beyond. This guide outlines everything you need to know before starting your new teaching journey abroad.
Once you’ve accepted a job offer:
Review your current employment contract to determine your required notice period—typically between 4 to 12 weeks.
Submit your formal resignation in writing, giving adequate notice and offering a smooth transition for your current school.
Politely request a written reference from your current employer, ideally on school letterhead.
Inform your leadership team of your future plans—it builds goodwill and ensures a strong professional relationship even as you move on.
Before interviews and certainly before relocation, ensure the following are in place:
Essential Documents:
Updated CV/resumé, tailored for international teaching roles
Scanned copies of:
Passport (valid for at least 6–12 months)
Degree certificates and transcripts
Teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, B.Ed., etc.)
Police clearance/DBS (from your home country or current location)
Proof of vaccinations (if required by country or employer)
Marriage or birth certificates (if relocating with dependents)
Recent passport-sized photograph and a professional headshot
Most international teaching interviews take place online. Here’s how to stand out:
Ensure a stable internet connection, a good camera, and audio.
Choose a quiet, professional space with good lighting and minimal distractions.
Dress professionally—first impressions still matter!
If you are based in the United Arab Emirates or United Kingdom, it is likely that you will be called for a physical interview.
Be ready to:
Share your teaching philosophy
Discuss curriculum knowledge (British, IB, American, etc.)
Describe how you manage behaviour and plan lessons
Show examples of student work, resources, or assessments (if possible)
Sample Questions You Might Be Asked:
How do you differentiate your lessons for mixed-ability learners?
What classroom management strategies have you found most effective?
How do you assess student progress?
Why are you interested in teaching abroad?
Tip: Want to practice before your interview? Ask us for mock interview support—we’re happy to help!
Once you accept a position, the school (or we) will provide you with:
An official job offer and employment contract
A timeline for your start date, orientation, and training (if applicable)
Visa sponsorship documents and instructions for application
Guidance on relocation, flights, and accommodation
Medical insurance, if part of your benefits package
Your dedicated TeacherScout consultant will stay in contact throughout this process to assist with any forms, documents, or questions you may have.
Relocating doesn’t need to be stressful—with the right plan, it can be exciting.
Things to Consider:
Apply for your visa early—processing can take several weeks
Book flights once your visa is approved
Sort out accommodation (temporary or permanent)—some schools provide housing, others offer an allowance
Purchase travel insurance if not already included
Ensure your banking and mobile arrangements are sorted—some banks require proof of address
Research your destination’s weather, culture, dress codes, and lifestyle
If relocating with family or dependents, additional planning will be needed for schools, housing, and documentation.
Settling into life abroad involves more than finding the nearest supermarket. Here’s how to adapt well:
Join expat communities (Facebook groups, forums, local teacher networks)
Learn about local customs and traditions—understanding cultural norms will ease your transition
Attend any orientation programmes your school offers
Keep an open mind—expect things to be different, and embrace the adventure
Every teacher experiences culture shock differently. Give yourself time and grace to adjust.
